Title:  “I have to testify”: Shifting the Black Gaze – Towards A (Black) Vision for Teaching in Difficult Times

Description:  The apparatus of inequality, both in the U.S. and globally, begins not with actions but with how people see each other. A narrow, limited viewpoint shaped a mythos of the world and, particularly, of Black bodies—an image constructed to support political and economic agendas. This mythmaking produced socially constructed histories and narratives about Black people, created without their consent.

Schooling remains a primary vehicle for promoting these distorted visions, embedding perceptions of Black non-being and non-mattering into the fabric of American society. The association of Blackness with servitude becomes ingrained in the minds and spirits of Black children, their families, and educators. There has been no true break from slavery and its legacies; K-12 education was not designed with Black children, educators, or families in mind. Instead, schooling for Black children has often been framed through a lens of control, enforced through various forms of structural, cultural, and interpersonal violence. These mechanisms aim to discipline and contain Black minds and bodies.
